Cemetery History |
This is a very old cemetery and in very poor condition. It is located in a wooded area in the backyard of Thomas Maxwell’s property maybe 10-15 steps from his maintained grounds. The cemetery was in very poor condition when his house was built and he has not done anything to maintain it. There were 14 visible stones some of which were broken and a half a dozen or so field stones with no identifying marks. The earliest date of burial was for John Bigger in 1809. The last burial date occurred about 1843. It is possible there were burials before and after these dates but there are no stones to show otherwise. Col. John Bigger’s wife, Hannah is buried here with an existing tombstone and it is possible he is too [he died in 1840], although no tombstone has been found. The current owner said the last burial occurred about 1847, but no stone was found to confirm this burial year. Many broken stones could be the result of livestock being let loose in the fields, as per information provided by Thomas Maxwell. From Dwight Meehan’s Nov 1977 transcription it was noted that there were many unreadable or fallen & buried stones. War of 1812 veteran Fleming Lowry is buried here. |
