This online index only lists the individual, death date (if known) and reference page. We are creating a master index of everyone who is buried in this county and their burial location to aid researchers. We are especially in need of people buried here who have no stones or whose stones no longer exist. If you have any of this information or if you have additional information for anyone who is buried in this cemetery, please email the Warren County Genealogical Society.

  • Beers History of Warren County, Ohio, page 642 says,
"In 1803, the Union yard was opened for the interment of the dead. This is in the Bowyer community, about a mile north of the present Union Church. About the same time the Muddy Creek Graveyard was started."
  • "From Palmyra To Kirkwood - The Early Progress Of Mason" by Dallas Bogan says,
"The early Baptists of the township found solace worshiping in each other's home. In 1804, they were recognized and admitted into the Miami Baptist Association. There is the possibility that William Mason's brother, the Rev. John Mason, was accountable for the congregation. Sometime later, a church not yet built, allowed the members to hold their services in a log schoolhouse along Muddy Creek near the Butler County line. A church was built later just west of this location along with the establishment of a cemetery. The first names recorded at the church were: John Seward, T.T. Brown and Robert Witham. "

Cemetery History

It was established in 1803, and took its original name from the Muddy Creek, which ran along side it. The Muddy Creek Baptist Church began first holding services in private homes, then moved to the school house near the Muddy Creek Cemetery. The church was admitted into the Miami Baptist Association in 1804 then by 1854, it had been dropped from the minutes of the Association. More recently the cemetery has been known as the Keltner Cemetery because it was on the Marion Keltner farm. The 1891 land plat of Deerfield Township shows the cemetery on the property of J. M. Vorhis (110.26 acres) in Section 5.  The property currently measures 200 ft x 222 ft.   More recently the cemetery has been known as the Keltner Cemetery because it was on the Marion Keltner farm. The 1891 land plat of Deerfield Township shows the cemetery on the property of J.M. Vorhis (110.26 acres) in Section 5.

    • This database was submitted to the USGenWeb Archives by Sherry Jenkins on 9 November 1999. The submission was based on data received from Lita and Eric Yarberry who compiled the information in conjunction with the 1998 cemetery restoration that was done by Carl Muennich, Secton and Eric Yarberry for his Eagle Scout Project. This listing identifies 18 additional burials not found by the Warren County Genealogical Society efforts described above. Seven of these were based on data other than a tombstone reading; six were based on stones that were found during the 1998 restoration but not replaced in the cemetery. The other five were footstones present in 1998 but not found during the 2006 visit.
