especially in need of people buried here who have no stones or whose stones no
longer exist. If you have any of this information or if you have additional information for anyone who is buried in

Cemetery History |
Rose Hill Cemetery is a large, active cemetery owned and operated by the Deerfield Township Trustees. On September 4, 1868, Peter W. and Sarah Wikoff sold 9 7/8 acres for $1.975 to the Deerfield Township Trustees (R. M. Cox, S. M. Cassiday & Joseph A. Dodds) after residents voted to raise $2,000 by taxation to establish a cemetery. Eight acres were added to the south end of the cemetery in 1909 and and additional 17.55 acres were later added to extend the grounds to the south section line. It is believed that Charles H. Shurts who died 26 August 1868 is the first person buried here. The first ROI entry is in 1874 for John Irwin. Tombstones death dates predate 1868 due to individuals who were moved and re-interred here from other cemeteries. Burials may have also occurred prior to the cemetery creation. The cemetery is 33 acres in size, and includes many veterans. The cemetery is the final resting place for well over 1,000 veterans. Revolutionary war veterans include: Jonathan Holcomb and William Mason. War of 1812 Veterans include: Ellis C. Kitchel and Mason Seward. |
