This online index only lists the individual, death date (if known) and reference page. We are creating a master index of everyone who is buried in this county and their burial location to aid researchers. We are especially in need of people buried here who have no stones or whose stones no longer exist. If you have any of this information or if you have additional information for anyone who is buried in this cemetery, please email the Warren County Genealogical Society.

Cemetery History

Rose Hill Cemetery is a large, active cemetery owned and operated by the Deerfield Township Trustees. On September 4, 1868, Peter W. and Sarah Wikoff  sold 9 7/8 acres for $1.975 to the Deerfield Township Trustees (R. M. Cox, S. M. Cassiday & Joseph A. Dodds) after residents voted to raise $2,000 by taxation to establish a cemetery.  Eight acres were added to the south end of the cemetery in 1909 and and additional 17.55 acres were later added to extend the grounds to the south section line. It is believed that Charles H. Shurts who died 26 August 1868 is the first person buried here. The first ROI entry is in 1874 for John Irwin.

Tombstones death dates predate 1868 due to individuals who were moved and re-interred here from other cemeteries.  Burials may have also occurred prior to the cemetery creation. The cemetery is 33 acres in size, and includes many veterans.  The cemetery is the final resting place for well over 1,000 veterans. Revolutionary war veterans include: Jonathan Holcomb and William Mason.  War of 1812 Veterans include: Ellis C. Kitchel and Mason Seward.

Cemetery Transcriptions

  • D.A.R. Turtlecreek Chapter & Warren County Historical Society (available at the Historical Society Library)
    • Early Vital Records Volume 15, all & Volume 19, page 1-89
  • Warren County Genealogical Society
    • Warren County Cemetery Records Volume 11 , all (Cemetery Sections 1-8, A1, B1, C1 & D1 ONLY)
    • Our thanks to Candy Taylor for the many many hours that she worked with Rose Hill Cemetery to provide the Warren County Genealogical Society with a photocopy of the Cemetery Register of Interments [ROI] and Lot Cards, all of which can be viewed at the WCGS Resource Library.   Candy also obtained an electronic Burial Register from the cemetery which has been combined with the information from Volume 11 to create the burial index being used on this site.  There are numerous duplicate names in the list at this time which will be eliminated as photographs are added to this site. Candy Taylor is also photographing all extant gravestones at the cemetery that have not done by others.
    •  In 2010, Adam Anthony and his team of assistants photographed all extant gravestones in Sections A1, A2, A3, A4 & A5 for his Eagle Scout Project.
    • Additional gravestone photos have been contributed by Michael Elliott , Glenn Horton , Don McAdams and others. As time permits, all of these photos will be added to the Rose Hill Cemetery portion of the "Warren County Virtual Cemetery Project" and will eventually be incorporated into the new cemetery books planned by the society.
