Josiah Morrow was born on 26 Aug 1838 near Fosters in Warren County, Ohio, the son of John and Nancy (Espy) Morrow and the grandson of Governor Jeremiah Morrow. Josiah graduated from Miami University in Oxford in 1859 and went on to become an attorney, reading law under Governor Tom Corwin and Judge George R. Sage. Josiah died on 28 December 1928 in Lebanon Ohio at the age of 90 years 4 months and 2 days. His body was cremated and the remains were buried in lot 8, grave 32 of Union Cemetery in Symmes Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, in the same lot as his parents and grandparents, Governor Jeremiah & Mary (Parkhill) Morrow. He never married.
Josiah Morrow was the author of the county history portion (Part III) of Beers 1882 History of Warren County Ohio. Much of the documentation of the early history of the county can be attributed to Josiah Morrow thanks to his life long efforts to gather and preserve the history of the county.
On May 9, 1907, the first of a series of Local History articles appeared in The Western Star newspaper published in Lebanon Ohio. He continued writing a weekly article for over 20 years, with the last of over 1000 articles being published in the 24 May 1928 edition of the newspaper when he was 89 years old and just 7 months before he passed away. [Due to a broken hip, no articles were published between April 1926 and May 1927]
Warren County Genealogical Society volunteer, Chuck Griffen, has gone through the microfilms of the Western Star and extracted 1,053 of the articles and assembled them into 5 loose leaf binders located in our Resource Library in Lebanon. Chuck has also created a topical index of the articles to use as finding aid which has been included on our website in chronological order which gives the title of the article, publication date and the page number where the article can be found in our binders. You can use the search function of you web browser to find an article on a particular topic.
If you see an article of interest, you may review the article by visiting our resource library. If you cannot come to our library in person, copies of individual articles can be obtained for $1.00 each by using our Mail Order Photocopy Request Form. When you send in your order form, be sure to indicate that you are requesting a Josiah Morrow article.
In 1993, Dallas Bogan compiled and published a 274 page book titled “The Pioneer Writings of Josiah Morrow” which contains material from 68 of the articles arranged by topic. The book is available from the Warren County Historical Society in Lebanon, Ohio. http://www.wchsmuseum.org/
