Warren County Auditors

The office of County Auditor was created in 1820 as an appointed position. Prior to this time the county commissioners' clerk performed the function. In 1821 the office was changed to an elected position with a one year term.  The term was increases to four years in 1919. Duties begin at the first of the new year after the election. The County Auditor is the book keeper & secretary for county.  Main duties of the auditor include: annually preparing duplicate tax lists (real estate, personal and classified), maintaining delinquent tax lists and appraising all property every six years.  Other duties include:  certifying al money to county treasury, sealer of weights and measurers, compiling and reporting various statistical reports and enumerations, issuing dog licenses, peddler licenses, et.  The auditor also serves as secretary of the budget commission, secretary of the board of trustees of the sinking fund, and a member of the board of revision.  The Auditor maintains complete records of all board proceedings.

Auditor’s Notes:

1.  Alfred H. Graham – quit office due to charge of embezzlement 18 July 1889.

2.   Ellsworth Benham – Appointed by commissioners, Fri. Aug 2, 1889 to fill vacancy by Alfred H. Graham

3.   George W. Smith died 16 Feb 1901.  New Auditor, Charles E. King appointed by County Commissioners, Tues. 26 Feb 1901 to fill unexpired term.

4.   Albert Stubbs won the 1912 election and took office in January 1913.  He died on 1 Feb 1914. 

5.   John M. Mulford was appointed on Saturday Feb 8, 1914, to finish the term left vacant by the death of Albert Stubbs.

6.  Charles S. Mounts won the November 1914 election and took office in January 1915.  Charles S. Mounts resigns Monday June 14, 1926 to ill health. Will R. Lewis appointed by the Commissioners during the week of June 17, 1926 to replace Auditor Charles S. Mounts.  Will R. Lewis won the November 1926 election over his opponent. 

7.  Commissioners appointed Marvin Stahl as Auditor, 21 June 1956, due to the resignation of Albert M. Parker for health reasons
