This office was created in 1788 for the Northwest Territory and started in Warren County in 1803 with a 2-year term limit, appointed by the governor. Duties included holding inquests for bodies found in county that died from criminal violence or casualty. Had same powers as the sheriff. In 1831 coroners were to return findings from inquests to Clerk of Common Pleas Court. Recording of Coroner’s Inquests in Warren County started in 1878. In 1921 Coroners in Warren County were empowered to perform autopsies but only by authorization of County Prosecutor. Their term limit was increased to a 4-year limit in 1936. Early coroners were not usually doctors, but by 1937 to be elected they had to be physicians in good standing. The coroner determines the cause(s) of death from violent or unknown circumstances. They may call an inquest jury to help decide verdict.

Coroners Notes:
1. Andrew Lytle died 23 June 1820 Union Township at the age of 64 years.
2. John Adams died April 1824. Richard Parcell was appointed 11 Sep 1824 to fill his position.
3. M. D. Egbert was appointed 11 March 1875.
4. H. M. Williams died 26 May 1955. Ralph Young appointed June 1955 to fill his position. He then won the 1956 election.
5. Warren C. Young appointed 1 July 1991.
6. Russell Uptegrove appointed 1 April 2007.
