The office was County Engineer was originally known as County Surveyor and began in 1803 as an appointed position by the Court of Common Pleas. It became an elected position in 1831 and the term was set to be three years. Early surveyor duties included: surveying all lands sold or to be sold, employment of chain men to establish boundary corners, reporting trespassing on public lands, and transcribing maps and plats. By 1906 the responsibilities expanded to include preparation of plans to construct or repair roads, turnpikes, bridges and ditches in the county and the cost of such plans. The name was changed to County Engineer in 1935 with a four year term and candidates had to be both registered and licensed professional engineers and surveyors in Ohio. Currently the County Surveyor / Engineer provides open access to all county maps & surveys of townships, villages and cities.

Surveyor Notes:
1. Emmor Baily, Jr.'s election was the first election for the surveyor that could be found mentioned in the newspaper.
2. The 1875 Atlas of Warren County lists L. S. Hatton as the Surveyor for Warren County from 1850 to 1856; however the newspaper election results have Isaac Peacock as the elected surveyor during those years.
3. Joel Evans won the election for commissioner while still in office as surveyor (and no one ran for surveyor office in 1871). A. F. Hinsch was probably appointed to complete the unexpired term until he won his election for surveyor in 1872.
4. Walter Henkle died in office 14 June 1906. His brother, Samuel D. Henkle appointed 18 June 1906 to fill unexpired term.
5. John S. Van Horn died in office 17 Feb. Samuel D. Henkle appointed to fill seat May 1934 until next election, which he won.
This office was renamed in 1934 from the office of surveyor. Provides open access to all maps & surveys of townships, villages and cities in the county.

County Engineer Notes:
1. Samuel D. Henkle resigns 1 Aug 1945. Harold Senf appointed to fill unexpired term.
2. Harold E. Senf resigns 18 May 1946.
3. Charles L. Guard Jr. appointed to fill Harold Senf’s place on May 1946 for the unexpired term.
4. Charles L. Gard resigns effective 1 April 1947 and Herschel C. Stiles in appointed to fill his position effective 3 April 1947 until Jan 1, 1949.
