Warren County Sheriffs

The office of Sheriff was created in 1792 when Ohio was still a territory.  Upon statehood this office was an elected position for a two year term.  The term expanded to four years in 1936.  The sheriff main duties include: attending the court of Common Pleas, Court of Appeals, County Court and the Probate Court, when requested.  The sheriff is allowed to adjourn the Common Pleas Court if the judge doesn’t show and the Court of Appeals if a quorum is lacking.  The sheriff serves all warrants, writs, subpoenas, and other orders from the courts, the governor or by other state officials and boards.  Other duties include: preserving the peace by suppressing riots, unlawful assemblies or insurrections; oversees county jail and prisoners; apprehends and incarcerates all felons and traitors; enforces election laws as necessary; in attendance at choosing of jurors and serves notice upon selection.  Most county sheriff’s records are open to the public except those dealing with probation or parole.
